Who is Private Bradley Manning?

Nobel Peace Prize nominee PFC Bradley Manning, is a 25-year-old Army intelligence analyst, who released the Collateral Murder video to WikiLeaks, that shows the killing of unarmed civilians and two Reuters journalists, by a US Apache helicopter crew in Iraq. Manning also shared documents known as the Afghan War Diary, the Iraq War Logs, and series of embarrassing US diplomatic cables.

What has happened to Private Bradley Manning?

Instead of being given a medal of honor for revealing war crimes, Private Bradley Manning has spent more than three years imprisoned, including nine months of torture, the longest pre trial punishment in the history of the USA. 

Nobel Peace Prize nominee Bradley Manning’s trial is finally scheduled to begin June 3, 2013, at Fort Meade, Maryland. The outcome of this trial will determine whether a conscience-driven 25-year-old WikiLeaks whistle-blower spends the rest of his life in prison.

Why should we care about Private Bradley Manning?

The Obama administration’s persecution of Bradley Manning has served as “a chilling deterrent to other potential whistleblowers committed to public integrity”. 

Bradley Manning has risked his life and liberty to expose the war crimes, human rights abuses, corruption and corporate collusion. His sacrifice was in the interest of the global citizenry.  He deserves our support and protection.

What happens to Private Bradley Manning and for that matter Julian Assange will determine the future capacity of whistleblowers, journalists, publishers and citizens to hold powerful interests to account.

Bradley Manning has already been in prison without trial for 1086 days. Julian Assange has currently been detained without charge for 891 days, including 329 days at the Ecuadorian Embassy. A secret Grand Jury on WikiLeaks has been active for 971 days. Enough is enough!

We demand an end to the prosecution of whistle-blowers and journalists.
We demand the Australian government speak up!
We urge the Australian media and public to support these brave men.

Julian Assange will present a Special Keynote speech at the 19th International Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA2013), presented by the Australian Network for Art and Technology (ANAT) at the University of Sydney on Thursday 13 June 2013 at 5.30pm.

The Wikileaks founder will address conference delegates and a small public audience via live video link from the Ecuadorian Embassy in London.

Julian Assange has a unique insight into the futility, or otherwise, of resisting the incursion of the digital into every aspect of our lives.

In systems under constant and multiple pressures there will always be leaks. Wikileaks exists because of this, embracing the digital, exploiting the ubiquity of digitised information: Resistance is Fertile.

Artists creatively investigate the possibilities and push the limits of new technologies, helping us to imaginatively experience and critically reflect on their implications for life in the 21st century.

The ISEA2013 program explores the ways art and new technologies are used in the service of power, protest and resistance.

Kissinger, Obama and drone killings: poster

"It is an act of insanity and national humiliation to have a law prohibiting the President from ordering assassination."

So said Henry Kissinger in 1975. Today's reality of illegal US drone strikes killing thousands so far, almost seems directly inspired by Kissinger's "ideals". Check out these amazing animated infographics of the drone war in Pakistan.

It sounds like satire, and it would be funny if it weren't true.

The Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum in New York City is planning to give Henry Kissinger an award on May 23rd for "defending freedom and democracy."

No living American has done more to subvert both freedom and democracy than Mr. Kissinger.¹

Kissinger worked with President Nixon to betray the U.S. Constitution by illegally bombing Cambodia without even informing Congress, and committed countless crimes against humanity through his role in dropping 3.7 million tons of bombs -- twice that dropped in all of World War II -- on civilian targets in Indochina.²

As someone who lived in Laos during much of the time, I interviewed more than 1,000 refugees from Kissinger's and Nixon's bombing in Laos. Every one reported seeing  countless loved ones and neighbors being burned and buried alive, and that their village was totally destroyed.

A Laotian farmer on the Plain of Jars wrote: "Every day and every night the planes came to drop bombs on us. We lived in holes to protect our lives. I saw my cousin die in the field of death. My heart was most disturbed and my voice called out loudly as I ran to the houses. Thus, I saw life and death for the people on account of the war of many airplanes in the region of the Plain of Jars. Until there were no houses at all. And the cows and buffalo were dead. Until everything was leveled and you could see only the red, red ground."³

All told, Kissinger helped murder, maim, or make homeless an officially estimated six million human beings between 1969 and 1972 -- a crime against humanity for which he would have been executed had he been subject to the  Nuremberg Judgement. 

Mr. Kissinger's entire "realpolitik" foreign policy was based on supporting brutal and undemocratic regimes that killed and tortured their own citizens.  This included overthrowing the democratically elected government of Chile and supporting genocide by Indonesia in East Timor.⁴

Let's honor the memory of all the countless lives Kissinger destroyed, and support  genuine freedom and democracy.

Please join us in protesting this outrageous award.
